The geographically closest server is a sensible starting point, not a guaranteed winner. ISP routing, peering, server load, protocol choice and evening congestion can all change the result. A short, repeatable test is more useful than chasing a single impressive speed-test number.
Match the metric to the job
Latency controls responsiveness; jitter describes variation; packet loss causes retransmissions; throughput matters for large transfers; connection time affects everyday convenience. Calls and games dislike jitter and loss, while downloads and high-resolution video need sustained throughput.

Run a fair three-server test

Why a low ping can still feel slow
